Part I &#8211; Getting Community Images"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When most people think of Microsoft Azure, they think of Windows servers.\u00a0 But Azure also supports popular Linux operating systems including Ubuntu, SUSE, CentOS, and Oracle Linux.<\/p>\n<p>When you create a new Virtual Machine in the Azure Portal, it offers you the choice of &#8216;Quick Create&#8217; or &#8216;Gallery&#8217;.\u00a0 Quick Create gives you a list of the most popular Windows and Linux images.\u00a0 If you want more choices, you can look at the Gallery, which has a larger selection of images, often with preconfigured stacks for databases, SAP, or enteprise versions. Almost all of these offerings come from distros that have partnered with Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>But Microsoft also has community based images that are shared through the VM Depot.\u00a0 Microsoft Open Technologies, which is owned by Microsoft, maintains a <a title=\"VM Depot upload site.\" href=\"http:\/\/vmdepot.msopentech.com\/List\/Index\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a> where the community can upload images to share.\u00a0 These images are transferred into Azure where users can copy them into their own accounts and use them.\u00a0 All images are free, and you can find a variety of software stacks here.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog, we will show you how to start up a LAMP stack using a preconfigured image in the Azure VM Depot.<\/p>\n<p>First, login to your Azure account.\u00a0 Select the Virtual Machines tab.\u00a0 Your screen should look something like the one below.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_91\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91\" style=\"width: 584px\" to get there.\u00a0 You can click on the &#8216;BROWSE VM DEPOT&#8217; link at the top, or press the &#8216;BROWSE VM DEPOT&#8217; button at the bottom of the screen.\u00a0 Chose either one, and the same VM Depot screen will appear.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_95\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95\" style=\"width: 833px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a get more info on it in the right hand column.\u00a0 If you want even more information,\u00a0 you can click on the image name in the right hand column.\u00a0 This will take you to the external community site where the image is described in greater detail.<\/p>\n<p>For this blog, we&#8217;ll use an Ubuntu LAMP stack.\u00a0 Clicking on the UBUNTU link in the left column limits the selection to that OS.\u00a0 We next scroll down to a LAMP and OS version we like.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97\" style=\"width: 832px\" class=\"wp-caption OS.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Having found the image, we simply click on the check box to go to the next screen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103\" style=\"width: 835px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/outworx.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Choose-a-storage-account-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103\" (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chose a region and a storage account name<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Azure will copy the image I selected into the region I specify in this screen.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll want this region to be the same one where you later run the VM.<\/p>\n<p>You also need to chose the storage account name.\u00a0 One thing that is a little bit different about Azure storage is that storage account names must be unique across all Azure users.\u00a0 This is because Azure assigns Internet-accessible URLs to the storage that use the storage name you select.\u00a0 If you have trouble finding a unique name, then add your company name or some random string to the base name you want.<\/p>\n<p>When you are done, click the check mark to start the copying process.<\/p>\n<p>Azure will immediately begin copying the image from VM Depot into your storage account.\u00a0 It will also take you back to the IMAGES tab of the Virtual Machines screen.\u00a0 When the copying is complete, you&#8217;ll see the image status change to &#8216;Pending registration&#8217;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104\" 840px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-104\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The image can&#8217;t be used until it is registered<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a final step, you need to click the Register button to register the image.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_105\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105\" style=\"width: 499px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a class=\"wp-caption-text\">After registration, an image is ready to be used<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Click the check mark to complete the registration.\u00a0 It is now ready to be used.<\/p>\n<p>One thing to note about this process is that when the image gets copies from the VM Depot into your storage account, you&#8217;ll start getting charged for the storage you use.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption-text\">The image placed in a storage account<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here you&#8217;ll notice that the Storage tab now has 1 account, the one we just created.\u00a0 The name matches what we selected when getting the image from the VM Depot.<\/p>\n<p>If you click on the storage account name and then CONFIGURE tab, you&#8217;ll see a display like the one sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 85vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Storage accounts use the Geo Redundant setting by default<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Notice that the Replication setting is &#8216;Geo Redundant&#8217;.\u00a0 This is a more expensive option that stores the data for the image at two geographically distributed data centers.\u00a0 While good for disaster recovery, it may be overkill for images that you are just using for testing.\u00a0 You can use the lower priced Locally Redundant setting by
